It was gorgeous day in the bay area yesterday and my mother in law and I were going to take advantage from the reprieve of rainy days by visiting the Bay Area Discovery Museum with little "P". Oh how I wish we had one of these in LA. It's located in Covallo Point in Marin just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge is so close to the parking and feels massive looking at it from that angle. Covallo Point used to be an area dedicated to army barracks and the museum was built in the original abandoned buildings. The designers of this museum thought of everything when imaging what kids would enjoy. My favorite room is the Tots room that has round water beds covered in blue heavy vinyl mimicking a pond topped with water lilly pillows and are connected by a tunnel that feels as if you are under a waterfall. I think little "P's" favorite room is the train/boat room that features a real boat that rocks and grotto. Describing all the rooms would take up an entire screen so suffice to say that if you are in the bay and have kids YOU HAVE TO GO!

Little "P" playing with the bark in a garden area.

Little "P" playing with wooden xylophone located by the Tot's room.

The insane view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the parking lot! Truly awesome!

Little "P" hanging out with out with Grandma. The surrounding area of the museum is spectacular. Bye bye.

A friend of mine told me that my clothing style is riviera and I think what she means is that I dress like I'm on vacation. This is true. I love linen drawstring pants, loose drapey blouses, airy dresses and flip flops. The Calypso shop has clothes just up my alley, though I have to pick and choose carefully because there clothes can get pricey. There color collection has just arrived and here are my faves. The printed drawstring pants above are too cool.

I am on a roll cooking from the Ottolenghi cookbook. Tonight I prepared the cauliflower fritters with yogurt sauce and the burnt eggplant salad. It was a rainy day in Mill Valley and on days like this, I stay inside and cook. But I was not in the mood for the usual comfort food, i.e. stews, soups or roasts. I wanted Mediterranean summer type food to pull me out of my rainy day blues. You know grilled marinated meats accompanied with sides full of herby, lemony goodness. So I pulled out the grill pan. I seared some chicken breasts that had been marinated in yogurt, lemon, garlic and turmeric. In order keep the smoke factor to a minimum, I sear the chicken on one side then turn them over and let them finish cooking in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. I find this method allots me the juiciest chicken with beautiful sear marks. I am finishing the night with a pavlova topped with strawberries. Ok, I guess I am showing off now!

I am very excited about two things. The first is that I just purchased the Ottolenghi cookbook while perusing the Book Depot in Mill Valley over the weekend and the second is that my husband's Valentine's Day gift just came in the mail, a Cannon Rebel camera! I could hardly wait to bust out the camera today. I am just getting used to such a techie device so take that into consideration while judging the the photos. My mother in law made a grilled cauliflower salad that is featured in the cookbook and was amazing! The only drawback to the book, if you can consider it a drawback, is converting the metric system.

I photo of the Ottolenghi cookbook featuring caramelized endive topped with ham.

A photo of halved cherry and grape tomatoes. I think they look luscious.

A photo of Ms. P at the park. I wonder why she looks so concerned. It might have been the weird noises I was making to get her attention.

My baby girl had her first birthday party on February 20th and I wanted to post some pics. It was very stressful planning the first birthday, I had so much pent up anxiety. I had this ridiculous fear that I would be letting my little girl down because I could have done things better. The dreaded curse of first time parents. Some parents told me the first birthday is the hardest but once you get through it the others are easier, less expectation of course. We will see. My in-laws were kind enough to let us host the party at their house in Mill Valley. We were careful not to trash the place too much! It was hard to relax and enjoy the party as I felt I was forgetting something which inevitably I did. I forgot to take a video and I forgot to put on the cute birthday hat I bought for Ms. P especially. Oh well. Better luck next time.

I made some old timey potato salad. It is always a hit.

Mac and cheese for the kids, though the grown ups ended up tearing through it too.

Catered jambon and buerre sandwiches from By-rite in San Francisco. They make the yummiest food!

Party favor bags filled with decadent pastries from Boulange in Mill Valley. The hydrangeas are from the San Francisco Flower Mart. We saved a bundle buying all the flowers for the party there.
